NASA scientist Norman Kuring created the images by combining data from six different orbits of the Suomi NPP satellite. Or putting it a different way, the satellite flew above this area of Earth six times over an eight hour time period.?This was necessary because the satellite isn't far enough away from the planet to get a complete picture in one view. Kuring describes it by comparing the Earth to a basketball?? if your eye is the Suomi NPP satellite, holding the basketball about five-eighths of an inch from your face will approximate the limited view that the satellite has of the planet's surface.
The Earth's diameter is about 7,926 miles, but the Suomi NPP satellite can only capture a view about 1,865 miles wide at one time. So stitching together the data from multiple passes allowed Kuring to "step back" from the actual orbit to give us an apparent view from a distance of about 7,918 miles away, without sacrificing any of the detail of the closer view. Violence in Mexico curtailing faith-based missions

McALLEN, Texas (AP) ? John and Wanda Casias knew the risks of being missionaries in one of Mexico's most violent, cartel-dominated regions, their children say, but they refused to curtail their work and instead put their ministry ahead of their safety.
The couple's slaying this week during a home invasion comes as missionary groups are rethinking how they prepare their volunteers to live in Mexico and other hotspots ? or whether to send them at all.
The cartel-fueled violence in Mexico has made parts of the country so dangerous that the U.S. government warns Americans not to travel in those areas. Mission groups, which have long flourished in the border region and other areas, have been forced to dial back outreach efforts and some have cancelled trips altogether out of fear missionaries could be targets.
For those determined to work despite the risks, at least some groups are starting to send volunteers to the same security training camps corporations and aid groups have used for years to prepare their employees for risky overseas assignments.
"For all of our new missionaries in recent years it is mandatory that they get security training commensurate with the risk level in that country," said John David Smith, executive director of the Baptist Missionary Association of America Department of Mission, which has four families currently volunteering in Mexico according to its website. His organization also has put in place other safety measures such as forbidding missionaries from driving in and out of Mexico, which would force them to travel through more dangerous border areas.
The Casiases, who were from Texas but lived in northern Mexico for 29 years, were found Tuesday by one of their sons at their home in Santiago, Nuevo Leon, both strangled. Mexican investigators have said they suspect they knew their attacker because no doors or locks were forced.
Another son, John Casias, said he had spoken to them many times about their safety, but they lived by faith.
"They weren't ignorant," he said. "He (John Casias) knew about the murders. My mother knew about what was going on in Mexico. They understood it. They knew it. Were they scared to death? No. They weren't going to live in fear."
Their deaths came about one year after another missionary from Texas was killed in Mexico. Sam and Nancy Davis were driving out of Mexico in January 2011 when gunmen tried to stop their truck about 70 miles south of Reynosa. When they refused to stop, the gunmen fired, killing Nancy Davis. The Davises, too, had done missionary work in Mexico for three decades.
Sam Davis has since gone into hiding, his mother, Francille Davis, said Thursday.
"They're still wanting to kill him," she said of the gunmen. Davis, who lives in South Texas, said she did not know where her son was, but did not think he had returned to Mexico as a missionary.
It's unclear how many Americans are missionaries in Mexico. No single agency tracks the missions, which establish churches and schools, build homes, run feeding and counseling centers and perform other outreach. There has been no evidence that the Casiases were targeted by a cartel, and authorities believe the Davises were likely attacked for their truck. Generally, missionaries say they try to keep a low profile and go about their work.
David Dose, who runs Fort Sherman Academy, a security training firm in Idaho that specializes in faith-based clientele, said his training has increased 400 percent in the past five years. While faith-based groups were slower to seek such training than corporations, he said he's seen a change in the past couple of years as groups look for more ways to prepare than faith alone.
"They're already spending all the time and money they can just to prepare for what they're doing and volunteering," Dose said. "But also there's been a bit of a struggle between at what point is it just not in the same spirit."
The academy's training generally covers areas such as information security, risk assessment and minimization, as well as specific situations such as hostage taking. He said while aid groups in some hostile countries hire private, armed security guards, the faith-based groups he works with do not.
"There's no desire to take an arsenal and go protect yourself in that way," Dose said of his faith-based clientele. "We're having to deal with how people can use their brains and the thinking that God gave them to try to improve the situation. But in the end ... you have to assume there's probably some risks you have to live with because you believe in what you're doing."
Many organizations have seen the number of missions they send to Mexico decline.
Daniel Rangel, director of River Ministry/Mexico Missions, which is part of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, said he only had about 80 mission groups last year compared to 400 before the violence got out of hand. Most that do come stay on the U.S. side of the border and just cross during the day and return later, he said.
The reduction in missions has been difficult for their partners in Mexico. "A lot of the people on the border feel abandoned," he said. They still ask churches to send resources even if they can't send volunteers.
For years, Jim Walters, director of Vision Ministries in Indiana, brought mission teams to Saltillo in northern Mexico. They would fly into San Antonio, rent vans and drive into Mexico through Laredo.
But a few years ago they stopped going.
"I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the safety and security issues," Walters said. "People were more reluctant to go."
Before making his decision to stop the trips, Walters said he spoke with many other groups doing similar work.
"I sensed a lot of them had discontinued or were seriously considering," he said. "It's a shame. A lot of good work and resources have dried up for them."
They now take their missions to Barbados.

Arsenic-based life finding fails follow-up
Tests see no evidence that microbe uses element in cellular machinery

The controversial claim that one microbe can use arsenic in its cellular machinery is mired in scientific quicksand after scientists attempting to duplicate the finding have come up empty-handed. Though the microbe in question clearly thrives in the presence of the usually toxic substance, there is no evidence that the bacterium requires arsenic to live or incorporates the element in its DNA, researchers report in a paper posted February 1 at arXiv.org.
The original study began when researchers led by Felisa Wolfe-Simon, a NASA astrobiology research fellow, cultured a microbe now known as GFAJ-1 from eastern California?s Mono Lake. The lake has an unusual aquatic chemistry rich in carbonates, phosphorus, arsenic and sulfur. Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues starved GFAJ-1 of phosphate, a combination of phosphorous and oxygen that?s an essential building block of life, and force-fed the critter arsenate, an almost identical arrangement of arsenic and oxygen.
It?s the chemical similarity of the two elements that makes arsenic such an effective poison. Cells can be tricked into absorbing arsenate, but the stuff doesn?t quite fit into the molecular machinery. That makes it unsuitable as a building block for DNA or cell membranes, jobs readily taken on by phosphate.
Using arsenate in the place of phosphate is ?like putting a round peg in a square hole,? says microbiologist Jim Cotner of the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.
Yet Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues reported that GFAJ-1 thrived when deprived of phosphate and fed only arsenate. ?We report the discovery of an unusual microbe, strain GFAJ-1, that exceptionally can vary the elemental composition of its basic biomolecules by substituting [arsenic] for [phosphorus],? the team wrote in their December ?2010 online report in Science.
The scientific community was astounded and perplexed. The notion that arsenate could do the work of phosphate was astonishing, says chemist Steven? Benner of the Foundation For Applied Molecular Evolution in Gainesville, Fla. Chemically speaking, ?so much of what we think is true would have to be false,? he says. And Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues didn?t do some experiments deemed obvious by other researchers, such as attaching a radioactive tag to the arsenate and locating exactly where it turned up in GFAJ-1?s DNA.
Now researchers led by microbiologist Rosemary Redfield of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver have tried to replicate the original growth experiments. Redfield, her colleague Marshall Reaves of Princeton University, and others grew GFAJ-1 in a test tube. After confirming with a genetic test that they had the right microbe, the researchers couldn?t get GFAJ-1 to be fruitful and multiply until they added a dash of glutamate, an amino acid that Wolfe-Simon did not use in her own experiments.
Then the team tried growing GFAJ-1 with no additional additives. The microbe didn?t grow nearly as much as Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues had reported. But she and her colleagues did note that the culture might have been contaminated by a little phosphate. So Redfield and her team added a sprinkling of phosphate, a comparable amount to what Wolfe-Simon?s team thought might have been in their culture anyway.
GFAJ-1 then grew much better. In fact, it grew in densities similar to those Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues had reported for GFAJ-1 when arsenic was added. And adding or removing arsenic from the cultures made no difference in growth, Redfield and her team report.
?At this point the discussion is essentially over,? says Benner, who was not involved with the work.
Nonetheless, Redfield, who reported much of her work on her research blog as it was being conducted, then extracted and purified GFAJ-1?s DNA. The samples did contain trace amounts of arsenate, but not in the ratios one would expect if the microbe had incorporated arsenate into its cellular machinery. More likely, says Redfield, is that GFAJ-1 can tolerate a bit of arsenic here or there without any serious effects.
?You can grow a bug in arsenic-rich media and you will see some arsenate,? says geobiologist Tanja Bosak of MIT. But that does not mean the arsenate is in the DNA, she says.
Wolfe-Simon, who says she can?t comment in detail until Redfield?s results appear in a peer-reviewed journal, wrote in an email that her original paper never actually claimed that arsenate was being incorporated in GFAJ-1?s DNA, but that others had jumped to that conclusion. ?As far as we know, all the data in our paper still stand,? she wrote. ?Yet, it may take some time to accurately establish where the [arsenic] ends up.?

Japan protests to China over undersea gas drilling (AP)
TOKYO ? Japan has accused China of unilaterally exploring gas deposits in the East China Sea, in violation of an agreement to jointly develop disputed areas.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters Wednesday that Japan protested to China after a flare was seen Tuesday at a Chinese structure at an undersea gas deposit. Japan has made similar complaints several times in the past.
"We have detected a flare, a sign that it is highly likely that there is a gas development going on," Fujimura said. "Any unilateral exploration is unacceptable."
The deposit, known as Kashi in Japan and Tianwaitian in China, sits near a median line of the two countries' overlapping exclusive economic zones.
Japan and China agreed in 2008 to suspend unilateral digging in that field while continuing talks, but talks have stalled since 2010, following a diplomatic spat stemming from a maritime collision near disputed southern islands claimed by both countries, as well as Taiwan.
Fujimura said China's activity around the disputed field violates the agreement.
A Foreign Ministry official in charge of China affairs said later Wednesday that Beijing justified its activity, repeating its claim that China has sovereignty over the area.
Days earlier, Beijing accused Tokyo of naming a group of uninhabited southern islands in nearby waters that both countries claim.
Four of the islands are in the disputed Senkaku, or Diaoyu, chain in the East China Sea. The islands, also claimed by China and Taiwan, have been a flashpoint in diplomatic relations.
Beijing said Tokyo's naming attempt is "illegal and invalid," the ministry official said on condition of anonymity because of sensitivity of the issue. Tokyo responded by saying the islands are an integral part of Japan.
Japan's Cabinet Office has said it will use the names for new maps, adding that the islets are within Japan's established exclusive economic zone and will not change any maritime boundaries.
The islands are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and are regularly occupied by nationalists from both sides.
Japan and China have often quarreled over the islands, the contested gas fields and lingering animosity over Japan's occupation of China in much of the first half of the 1900s.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, California ?? A 120-pound bull mastiff dog escaped from its yard and attacked a 6-year-old boy and his mother Maria Juarez as they walked past the dog?s home? in a Moreno Valley residential neighborhood, according to police reports.
The dog first attacked Juarez?s son Ruben mauling his head and ripping off part of his ear. The mother, who was pushing a younger sibling in a stroller, was also bitten on her hip after she intervened in an attempt to stop the dog from attacking her son. The younger child in the stroller was not harmed in the dog attack.
Both the mother and son were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Doctors were able to re-attach the boy?s ear
The Jan. 24 dog bite incident took place just before noon on Indian ?Avenue near Sunnymead Boulevard. The owner of the dog came to help the family and put the dog back into its yard prior to the arrival of police. The dog owner was not cited for the incident.
The dog owner handed over the dog to Moreno Valley animal control officials who placed it under quarantine, but the 18-month-old animal is most likely going to be euthanized due to the unprovoked attack.
Under California Civil Code Section 3342, the dog owner in this situation may be held accountable for the actions of the dog: ?The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner?s knowledge of such viciousness.?
