Then There Were Five -- Jon Huntsman Quits GOP Race (ContributorNetwork)

Former Utah governor and former ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has decided to quit the GOP race for president. His campaign finished in third place in the New Hampshire primary despite heavy campaigning. The Ticket cited Huntsman's inability to dethrone candidates ahead of him despite major endorsements as one reason for dropping out of the race.

Here's a look at Huntsman's campaign from start to finish.

* Huntsman announced his run for president in mid-June 2011. The New York Times reported the politician made the announcement at Liberty State Park in New Jersey with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop.

* Huntsman resigned as ambassador to China in the Obama administration to run for president. In delivering his speech announcing his candidacy, Huntsman disagreed with the president on how to fix the economy.

* His ties to the Obama administration were seen as a liability by Republican voters. Many of Huntsman's ideas were also seen as not conservative enough, according to Reuters.

* Huntsman endorsed Mitt Romney after dropping out of the race in South Carolina.

* There are five remaining mainstream candidates for the GOP nomination. Romney, Rep. Ron Paul, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry are still in the race approaching the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

* Huntsman cited an "onslaught of negative and personal attacks" in his speech announcing his withdrawal. The Washington Post reports Huntsman decided to continue his campaign in South Carolina after New Hampshire, calling third place his "ticket to ride."

* Huntsman finished in seventh place out of seven mainstream candidates in the Iowa caucus on Jan. 3. He garnered only 745 votes, according to the New York Times.

* The former Utah governor finished with 41,945 votes in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10. That was good for 16.9 percent and a third-place finish. His total was less than half of the votes earned by Romney and 15,000 fewer than Paul.

* Huntsman's official campaign website states Romney is the best choice to try to defeat Obama in the general election. He offered his "heartfelt thanks" to supporters who have stuck with him for his six-month campaign. Among his passions for the rest of the GOP campaign include ending foreign sources of oil supplies, fixing the tax code, congressional term limits, financial reform and education reform.
